Help, I dont know what to do

I work in a charity day care centre and because it's a charity we don't have a union. I am a bank worker and don't have contract.

So this is my problem. i'm the youngest worker at the day centre by 20 years which means I do get protected by the older workers and when i first started 11 months ago one gentleman (charley) took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. Once i had found my feet and started to work alone, Charley became almost childlike in trying to get attention. One day in October Charley snapped on the bus that we use to pick up clients. When I got home, i found myself in tears from the things he said but knowing his home life was bad I didn't say anything to management. He however felt bad and felt the need to tell our line manager, who is also my mother, what happened. We went on as normal til Dec when I couldn't take the childish behaviour anymore and quietly confronted him on it and asked him to stop. After that charley bacame distant with me making me more distant with him. Shortly after, he made a complaint about the coldness between us and we were pulled into the office to discuss it. This went from bad to worse and I was left in tears again. This made me a lot more distant as I felt cornered by him. Late Jan, he had me pulled into the office again. This time with just the manager (mothers boss) and he was verbally aggressive and my manager did nothing to stop him. My mother warned me that I'd be pulled into the office again and to get a grievence letter together. I lost my bottle in handing it in. I was scared for my job. I was pulled in to the office but this time with the branch manager and my manager. They complained about unprofessional behaviour that they could've only known about if someone had told them. Some things only Charley would know since I was on the bus with him when most of it happened. Little things like feet being up on the seats and not talking to him. When I made my complaint about his behaviour towards me, neither my branch manager and my normal manager wanted to know. Today I received a letter from my manager and branch manager of things I needed to change and was told I needed to sign it there and then. It was read to me but being dyslexic I did need it to be read slowly and explained which is wasn't. Ashamed of my disability i said nothing and was too nervous to think or argue my own case.

Sorry for this whining but I could really use some advice please? What rights do I have etc? I don't want to lose my job but also don't like it there anymore because of it.

Until you've been in the job 12 months you have minimal rights. this all sounds like a mess, but you need to resolve it if you want to keep your job. you are entitled to have your grievance heard if it has been submitted formally, so your first step needs to be to write to your managers asking what the timescale is for hearing your complaint. secondly talk to your mother, she may be able to support and help you. thirdly take that letter down to CAB and get some advice from them.

  • Hi first of all do you belong to a union if not join. You are entitled to a member of staff or a person of choice to go into any meeting where you are in dispute.

The managers at your place of work have acted wrongly and should have told you to get representation. You should not have been forced into signing anything without getting advice.

Its been handled really badly and you can lodge a greviance. Get advice.
  • Thanks for the help and I'll get right on to CAB.
