Credit report issues..! Advice needed...

Right so I'm now virtually out of debt and am now setting about cleaning my credit file... There are two issues with it that bother me...

I defaulted on all my outstanding credit in early 2003 and have paid creditors off over the next few years. Most of the creditors defaulted my accounts except Capital One... They simply kept listing me as more than 6 months overdue month after month until I settled. Settlement date was january 2006 and this is now stuck to my file until 2012 rather than this year if they had just defaulted it as others did. Is this irritating practice normal? Is there anything I can do about it?

Secondly with Cahoot... There is a default on there (satisfied) for £140.01 from 2008... Thing is, I rang Cahoot in early 2006 and asked for a current balance and paid them off in full. This "outstanding" £140.01 was passed to a collection company (paid the same day their letter arrived) 2 years later and a default placed on my file... Have spoken to the collection firm who issued the default and they insist that as long as its marked satisfied then it will not adversely affect my ability to get credit...

Is this correct..? If not (which I suspect) who do I contact to have it sorted out as it's clearly a mistake...

  • I'm bumping this one as I would be interested to know the answers.
  • I had a default for £58 and this was marked as satisfied and believe me it did affect my credit worthiness, my credit card interst doubled over night and the limit was more than halved aswell.
If you feel its unjust i would definitely contact cahoot to see if they are willing to remove it for you.
  • You may find that as the Capital One account was never defaulted, the details may only be recorded for 3 years after settlement date.
According to your information, that should be January 2009. It may be worth checking your file at the end of February to see if it has been removed.

Do not listen to this DCA when they say this default will not adversely affect your credit worthiness, it most definitely will.

I'm a bit confused about when the "outstanding £140.01" was paid. Was this the amount that you paid Cahoot in 2006 to pay off your balance in full or is this an amount on top of that payment that they stay you still owe?

If this was paid in 2006, then you have a good case for getting the default removed by contacting Cahoot, the DCA & the CRA involved.

However, if this is an amount above your settlement figure, then this may be more problematic to remove. Have you kept all the written documentation that proves Cahoot accepted this payment as full & final settlement figure?

  • Thanks for your replies people!! Just spoken to DCA and Cahoot...

As far as I was concerned my dealings with Cahoot ended in 2006 when I rung and settled. However it turns out they didn't include the £140.01 outstanding on my credit card account with the £2500 outstanding on my flexi loan credit account when I asked for a settlement figure!!!!!

How annoying... The £140.01 dropped through my door two years later with another default attached to it which was paid instantly... Do they not have an obligation to ask me for the money before dropping a default on my file and threatening court action?

I mean they only had to ask I had no idea I owed them anything!

What is the best course of action? Do correction notes on your credit file have any weight or are they just to make disgruntled people feel a little better?
