Sorry for my ignorance but I don't understand who the UK government borrows money from. If there is a global recession and we as a country are going to have to increase our debt, then who is in a position to lend money to us? Aren't all european countries plus the US in similar positions?
Are we all going to go cap-in-hand to the arab emirates?

Foreign governments (eg. China, and those from Middle East) and pension funds are the main lenders to the UK government. Money from sold equities and money which is no longer loaned to business has to be invested somewhere.0
