strange phone call

Had a phone call this morning from a lady saying she was from puzzle finder magazine ,she said it was a return call as last time she phoned me i couldnt find my bank cards .,and that i had enterd a comp for a 50" tv and had won a smaller prize, but it could only be sent if i have the next issue of the free magazine but i have to pay post and packing on this as it comes from Holland.
i have never heard of puzzle finder and i no i have never had a call from this lady befor let alone told her i cant find my cards,i declined the offer and she hung up,just wonderd if anyone else has had anything like this happen ....if not be warned ,i would never give out my bank or card details over the phone but some unsuspecting person may .

Thanks for the warning... that's a bit worrying....
  • Its scarey to think that some poor unfortuante people actually do fall for this kind of ploy its shameful really my mum has best answer for these calls she is all nicey nicey and says "oh my bank details no problem name on card yes its DO YOU THINK I WAS BORN YESTERDAY do you want the long number now" by which time they have usually hung up. She sometimes gives them a fake address ending in NEVER NEVER LAND which again results in them hanging up or if she being really playful she talks them round the houses "Well you called me why dont you know my name" , "You say your from sky so why dont you have my bank details then?" "If this is free why do you need my card details"

Thanks for the warning, don't think I'd have handed over my details, but as you say others might - golden rule; if some one calls you unexpectedly don't give them any details, if it sounds important ring the company back yourself, so you know it really is them you're speaking to.

I find the best idea if you do have a call and you're sure it's dodgey is to sound interested, but find a reason and put them on hold, if you can be bothered keep coming back to them and appoligise, but put them back on hold - keep them there for as long as you can (with minimum inconvinence to yourself) that way you watse as much of their time and money as possible. OK it'll only be about 5 minutes and few pence for the call, but I'll take any small victory where I can, and the time that's wasted on hold with me is time they're not ripping off someone else!
