Debt collector for previous tennant

background is i moved in 3 months ago and previous tennants asked for us to redirect their mail. we did this for about a month and as there was no reduction in volume we started to send it back as return to sender, addressee does not live here anymore.

ive just had a debt collecter round for bcw, they were nice enough, but demanded to see my id and tennancy agreement so that they could see that i was not lying over who i was and what i had said. i showed them my id and tennancy agreement just to get rid of them and gave them the new address for the previous tennants.

what can i do for future as obviously i dont want to be flashing my passport and tennancy agreement at everyone who turns up at the door. my mum has suggested i contact the landlord to let them know that this has happened just so that they are aware of things, but what else can i be doing?

thanks

Why not just let everyone know the new address of the previous tenant?

I would contact the landlord so that he is aware. It is something that happens frequently where I live after one tenant did a flit owing the landlord rent as well.

A bailiff turned up here once and I gave them the previous tenant's details and since then I haven't been bothered by any calls or letters, I am thinking that they must have put something down on a national database or something.
  • I had this problem with a previous tenant and was relieved that my new tenant told me as he'd defaulted on his council tax the entire time he lived in my house and the council started chasing me! I was able to send them a copy of the tenancy agreement and his forwarding address. Other than a court official turning up one day looking for him I never heard anything again.

Conversely after my sister moved out of her flat the new tenant started running up mail order bills in my sister's name!

  • the same thing happened to me a few years ago when a bayliff came to the door looking for previous owner. They were fine about it all and said they would take the address off the database. We heard nothing else after that

  • thanks everyone. i think im panicking when i dont really need to panic, but i dont want any issues with my credit or my partners credit as im just starting to recover from debt probs and my partner has never had any in his life.

will let the landlord know via email so there is a record of things and will just continue returning all mail to the sender.
