Why can't these doors be waxed?

OH used clear Briwax on the doors in present house and was very happy with that (recommended by someone renovating a house nearby with all original woodwork). He'll probably stick with that brand.
On some dado rail I think he made up a solution of instant coffee to stain it first then waxed later on. That tip was given to him by a long-standing qualified carpenter/joiner (I really wish I knew the difference, wouldn't like to offend any tradesmen!).0
