Happy with Argos for once

I bought a pair of Malibu wardrobes 10 months ago (priced @ 74.99 each) as a temporary measure as my husband and his brother had destroyed our other wardrobes during our house move 12 months ago. We bought the Argos cheapies while we waited to decorate the house in full and then planned to buy some solid Mexican Pine furniture.

Anyway, these wardrobes have lasted less than 10 months - they started to fall apart a couple of months ago. Dodgy, weak drawers and the sides leaning like the leaning Tower of Pisa and basically coming away from the fittings. Couldn't even close the doors properly in the end.

I instructed hubby to dump them at the tip after collapsing them and said we'd buy a temporary canvas wardrobe til our room is finished and then we'll buy our dream furniture. However, I decided to look for the receipt to confirm when I bought them as I think 10 months of use takes the mickey.

Found receipt, confirmed last April purchase and phoned Argos cust services who said to dismantle them as much as poss and take them back to store I bought them from and get a full refund. Which we did and Argos basically gave us back a no quibble refund. Just asked what went wrong, said sorry and gave us the refund so I'm very happy to be £149.98 better off and the refund is going towards buying our new, solid furniture from a different retailer.

It pays to keep receipts everyone - even if the receipts only say '30 day money back guarantee'. Argos dealt with it very quickly even though they were 10 months old (but still within 12 month guarantee) but as I understand it they don't have to give a refund after their 30 day guarantee - they could have offered a repair or replacement. So well done to Argos! :T

Shame I couldn't get a refund at current selling price though as they have gone up by a whopping £9.70 each since April to £84.69

True enough. At the end of the day there might be something going wrong with it so by getting it checked now you won't be stuck AFTER the guarantee is up. If you'd left it then it might have broken down after the guarantee when there's not much you can do.

Pretty sure that all repairs and replacement parts have a 12 month guarantee from the time it was done so make sure you get a slip or receipt for any work done.
  • according to consumer direct, they do have a responsibility to you after the 12months on something like a washing machine - fit for purpose SOGA. These big items should work longer than 12 months!
I'm getting older, and lifes getting harder!

As they've been OK with refunding, without any hassle, why not see if they've any more solid & up to the job, wardrobes, in their range - or check out the Homebase stuff, too?

At least you'll know you can rent it for 11months & start all over, if it looks like it's not as strong as you thought!!:o

I bought 'cheapo' Scandinavia sets for our bedroom from Argos when we moved in 8 years ago, but they refuse to die! They are going to last forever I can see  :D:D

I like some furniture from their more 'solid' ranges but I have found identical ones many £££ cheaper elsewhere, for example the triple wardrobe I like in Mexican pine is £249.99 in Argos but £189.99 in another shop local to me and they also have the matching bits and pieces cheaper than Argos too.

I like your way of thinking though - giving them a trial run for 11 months :D .

I bought the Scandinavia double bed and wardrobe years ago when my hubby and I first started out in our own flat and the bed lasted us about 18 months before the slats started coming away from the headboard and the base cracked. I think it's the luck of the draw sometimes and they do say to regularly check the fittings for signs of wear or looseness which I admit I didn't do :o .

Opposite happened with their (previous catalogue) Avebury computer desk!

Their price £90ish - although it was clearence when we got it £60ish, but currently in John Lewis with black glass, instead of tinted & chrome instead of painted silver £190!!!

& if anyone wanted one, Homebase Dunstable have some left, for just £44ish!!
