Have you managed to find any loo paper that isn't wrapped in plastic? It's just that its come up a debate on the thread about the environmental impact of loo paper... I'd be interested to know whether anyone here has a solution!0

Article on coop but still wrapping albeit in biodegradable plastic. Coop have clearly done a bit of work so why the barrier to paper wrapping?

Ecosoft toilet tissue - 9 rolls but they're individually wrapped.

(need to remove space between ethical and superstore)

international delivery is dubious though.0 -
greenbee,
Thanks for the washing-up liquid and excuse my ignorance, but what exactly are 'soap flakes' and 'liquid castile soap' ?
I have to admit that i do still take plastic bags sometimes, but i then take them to one of our local small shops to re-use. At least they get one more life.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Have a look at this thread for a discussion on where to buy castile soap http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=8195117
It's a natural liquid soap.
Soapflakes are just flakes of soap, you can sometimes find them with the handwashing stuff in the supermarket.0 -
Boots sold soap flakes up until a month or two ago. Not looked since - may still do them0

Have a look at www.sumawholesale.coop and enter product code NF915 in the search bar. Outer is plastic, but rolls are loose. Not perfect but some way to a solution if you have room.0 -
Thanks for the posts, particularly the ones on the loo roll problem. I've been pondering this and have come to the conclusion that if I were to buy industrial "jumbo rolls" a case at a time I'd probably be ok - but I'm not sure if I'm quite ready to return to industrial loo rolls at home. Isn't it silly, how a little thing like that is putting me off? *blush*
So far, I've done quite well - OH keeps forgetting though. I've decided to keep [washed] all the plastic we bring into the house for the month and sort it out at the beginning of April. That should focus both our minds on it!
It's odd, but it seems a lot harder this time around. It seems that you can barely get away from the darn stuff.
What's everyone else's take on this? Is it harder now than it was, or am I just being nostalgic? If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!0 -
Just a thought but i think the industrial individual tissue type loo paper comes wrapped in paper sleeves
some options on here
http://www.nisbets.co.uk/products/ProductSubCategory.asp?TopGroupCode=C6&ParentGroupCode=S167
this seems a good deal as each roll is equall to four standard
http://www.nisbets.co.uk/products/productdetail.asp?productCode=Y034&BrandGroupCode=&BrandGroupName=&ShopByBrand=
but cheaper here

doesn't mention being paper wrapped but i believe all lotus products are
Shaz - going now as getting loo roll obsessed*****

Hi there, interesting thread.
I very much applaud the idea of trying to reduce waste packaging, and also trying to re-use containers and bags to avoid the wasted energy of always using new ones. And I very much agree that any form of waste is a bad thing.
But I was just wondering why plastic is being singled out as being intrinsically worse than any other material? I understand that plastic has become so ubiquitous that it has become a potent symbol of our throwaway society, but surely that does not mean that because something is made from plastic, then it is automatically worse thank something made from glass, metal, wood, paper etc. I understand that the non-biodegradable nature of plastic is seen as a negative attribute. Also you have to take into account the energy expended in making something out of a certain material - in some cases it may be much more energy efficient to make an item from plastic than other materials. It's a complicated issue, and I don't think anyone really has any definitive answers.
As I said I agree with reducing unnecessary waste, and I would probably also agree that a large majority of that waste in most people lives is indeed in the form of plastic. I just don't think that all plastic is automatically bad. Anyway, I salute you for what you are doing, and will continue to look for ways to reduce waste in my own life!Don't pay off your student loan quicker than you have to.0
