Plumber's costs?

I'm having a new kitchen fitted and had a quote from a recommended plumber. All he has to do is replace a radiator at present site, plumb in sink also at same site, disconnect a VERY old stand alone cooker and move gas to another site for a hob. He is CORGI registered and it isn't really much work.He is saying that it will take 2 days. For this he is charging £330.What I would like to know is this reasonable?

  • In my opinion £330 for two days work is quite reasonable. But the question is, is it two days work?!?! Get a couple of other quotes to be certain. Try looking on the Guild of Master Craftsmen web site where you can search for a plumber by your area. I think you will need a corgi registered one as he is moving the gas supply. The web site address is https://www.findacraftsman.com

Hope this is of some help!

I know that it wouldn't really take 2 full days for the work to be done. All he has to do is pop in when the joiner is fitting the kitchen to plumb in the sink and hob.He also lives nearby so travelling is no problem. But he often works with the joiner I have chosen so they are in contact with each other.I am just wary of hiring a "cowboy" as I have had bad experiences of this before.

Why not search on Corgi's website? Most Corgi registered plumbers will not be in Guild of Master Craftsmen, as this would be another 'membership' cost they would have to pay.

I just had some plumbing work done in my kitchen.

    1) Supply and fit new radiator + pipes. (New location is approx 4m from old location)
    2) Disconnect old Gas Hob.
    3) Reconnect New Gas Hob. (Second Visit - 2 weeks later)

    This cost me £250

    sink - 1 hour
relocate gas pipe work - 1 hour
    install hob - 1 hour
radiator - guessing at 1/2 day as system may need to be drained

    37.50 hour
    200 -> 250 day

Charged £195 for disconnecting sink and gas hob and then fitting new sink and tap, dishwasher and gas hob. The plumber came and went a couple of times working roundabout the joiner. Didn't have an issue with the price this time but I feel generally he is prone to charging for "extra" work that he should have known needed doing.

I've got the same problem with tradesmen who like to work together. I like my joiner and have used him for years but I don't have the same trust in the plumber he works with a lot. For a big job such as the kitchen or bathrooms, the joiner organises the timimg of the plumber and the electrician (who I have also used before and am happy with) so it saves me time and stress. It is awkward to say I am not entirely happy with plumber (everything he touches seems to develop a scratch or dent and I'm a bit fed up with it!).

I wasn't brave enough not to use that plumber for the kitchen or bathrooms but have decided to use a different one to replace some radiators and cap a gas fire supply.

Would say robv is pretty near the mark, although I would say allow 2 hours to relocate the gas pipe, and it depends where you live really, and wether as Gas Saftey Certificate will be issued. I would say your not being overtly ripped off though at £330
