Advice please - Currys!!

Options
Hi all,

I ordered a TV from Currys on Wednesday and the guy at the desk messed up my transaction. As I left the store, I noticed that the receipt he had issued me with looked like an exchange receipt with no details of my debit card or personal details such as name/signature. I went straight back into the store and he told me that it was a valid receipt but on further questioning agreed to make me a photocopy of the original receipt with my card no and signature on, which he gave me while he kept the original.

Now I'm a bit worried that if there's a problem they wont accept my proof of purchase!! I havent received the TV yet so im wondering whether i should try and cancel my order tomorrow and get a refund (as its only been 5 days!) Also i've seen the tv cheaper in dixons now!!

What does everyone else think??

  • I doubt if you would be able to cancel after 5 days, but this depends on the delivery time.

As for proof of purchase, you paid by debit card so you will have proof on your bank statement. This is acceptable as proof of purchase, especially when there is a problem with the item (though they might argue if you are just trying to cancel/change it for no real reason).

  • its due for delivery on thursday...they say on their website you can be refunded 7 days AFTER delivery so i would have thought BEFORE it was delivered would be no problem??
  • Just looked on their site and yes that should be absolutely fine.

Just be warned (not saying this is what will happen!) - you might end up having it delivered and then picked up again. Just that their processes are rather convoluted and I have heard that this can happen!

Might be worth mentioning when you cancel that you have seen the TV for £X in Dixons - they might even match the price (unlikely!).

  • Thanks for that! thought id got a good deal in currys...the assistant did reduce the TV intially to Dixons price but then added a stand and persuaded me i was still getting a good deal, when in fact its only £30 off their original price and still £50 more than Dixons!! I'm just worried about the copy of the receipt...i dnt understand why he refused to give me the original!

That applies to Internet orders only, not in-store purchases (unless I suppose you haven't actually seen the TV and were ordering from a catologue in-store).

    Next to impossible IME!

I doubt if many people on this site would able you the definitive answer to that question, maybe you would be better speaking to the store manager.

It did say on the website that you can take the receipt in to the store, which in my mind reads to say that it includes instore purchase too

How to cancel an order and return an item

Go to a store with your receipt and the card you paid with, or
Email us at
curryswebsales@currys.co.uk if you ordered online or currystelesales@currys.co.uk if you ordered by phone to request that we collect the product or send you mailing labels, or
[*]Phone us on 0844 561 1234 with your order reference number and delivery details to handI would certainly expect to be able to cancel on that basis.

Do the email addresses not give a clue? :)

It's just standard Distance Selling Regs. The taking things back to the store is just a convenience rather than have to post things back to them. It doesn't mean in-store purchases are cancellable within 7 days.
