employers can basically do what they like

i think reading these threads and from personal experience employers can do pretty much whatever they like with little consequences. Is it really worth the stress of me taking my current employer (a govt agency) to a tribunal for breach of contract (didn't follow through their offer of a job) for a measly weeks salary?? I'm in a union but still don't feel protected or that it will reverse any decision.
everytime a new claimant signs on for jobseekers allowance there should be a part about the reason they were dismissed and an adjudicator should investigate it - afterall these easy sackings just add to the governments already expensive welfare benefits bill. employers should be made accountable.
its time they system for dismissals was tightened up on the employees side.

Were you employed and offered a new position with this company or was it a totally new job?
Did you have an offer in writing?0 -

The mechanism to address this is through the employers grievance procedure.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -

i already work for the company and it was a promotion and involved a 3 part interview including a 15min presentation.
it was a written offer that stated the post name subject to crb &medical clearance which i passed then suddenly they change their mind - and offered me something different and its this i feel has been the breach of contract. In addition and HR have verified this, the jobs were allocated on peoples currntly location and scoring had nothing to do with it - i'm fuming as i've had feedback and got skyhigh marks which have been totally disregarded.0 -
i know but as i mentioned, what's the point - i won't achieve anything. its won't magically produce a job for me as they've all been given out now and vacancies for that post probably won't come up for ages. The mechanism to address this is through the employers grievance procedure.0 -
I think you've answered your own question then. Employers can do whatever they like because they don't get challenged. People don't challenge because they say "whats the point" and because of this employers continue to do whatever they like.i know but as i mentioned, what's the point - i won't achieve anything. its won't magically produce a job for me as they've all been given out now and vacancies for that post probably won't come up for ages.0 -
It is easy to think that the balance of power in the employment relationship always lies with the employer. Just now, recession makes it feel worse as people feel lucky to have any job, however they are treated.
But the truth is that apart from small companies where the boss is the owner, employers are only as good or bad as the people they employ. And that is not just managers, often co-workers are the ones who can make your working life a misery.
But doing nothing is not and never has been the way to change things - we should all try to do what we can to make working life better for ourselves and others. This might be positive things like mentoring or, at times of strife, taking a grievance on a point of principle.
But pick your battles, and walk away if your health is at risk - nothing is worth that.
We have more power as employees than employers care to think - we just have to learn more subtle ways to use it."Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm" (Sir Winston Churchill)0
