A question about widening the neck on a knitted jumper

I've got a couple of jumpers for the children that fit in the body but I struggle to get them over their heads, I think my lot have big heads! Was wondering how I could go about widening the necks without the whole thing coming apart. Thinking maybe if I sew some fabric onto the shoulder I can cut through then put some poppers on somehow? Only need about an inch I think.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Fluttering about an inch off the ground, I may fly properly one day and soar in the clouds!

Are they handmade ones? If so, you could unpick a little of the neckband, pick up the stitches and knit enough rows to fold the neckband over IYSWIM. Cast off very loosely in rib. The neckband should then stretch enough when you put it over your children's heads.
