  • To sell them legally you would need to check with your local council/enviromental heath or something similar. Once you have all your approvals through & certificates to prove it then it might be worth taking out an add in any local/freebie papers or directory that you get through the door.

Never let success go to your head, never let failure go to your heart.
  • Id buy some if your local i love homemade food :)

Let as many people as you can know about it and you will do really well
    good luck

My aunties and one of my cousins do buffet catering - they do the cooking in my aunties kitched- they did have to do courses & have checks done on the kitchen (don't know the specifics but I'm sure if you rung your council they would be able to tell you) - but they got approval for it, so it is possible.

    Good luck with it!

i sell my cakes as a second business. The easiest way is just to go to a local deli/cafe and take some samples. regular orders from a place like this are the best way to get known. Also, your stuff sounds a bit varied - best to concentrate on a couple of things you do really well. Mine is cupcakes, and it's what I've become known for.
  • Make sure you have a health and hygiene certificate and you generally have to pay for your council to come and inspect (and pass) your kitchen. I looked into selling my cakes over a year ago but the cost of the inspection was just too much for me to pay at the time.

If you sell at fetes/fairs then noone asks if you have had the inspection, or even if you have a hygiene qualification, but if someone then falls ill from your cakes you're in BIG trouble. Definitely need to look into insurance also in case someone has an allergy to one of your ingredients without realising, or ingredients accidentally get cross-mixed in different cakes.

Talk to the Environmental Health Dept. of your local council and they will let you know what needs to be done and in what order :)

Also, Sarahs999's advice is good - if you can get into local deli's then that's a great place to be but you definitely need the hygiene certificate, etc then because the deli owner will obviously know who to turn disgruntled customers to!

  • After getting your license go ahead and sell your yummy cakes. Start first within your neighborhood and get their feedback. After which you could start a food chain.

  • Wow i had no idea how much forethought and planning would be required i naively thought it would simply be a case of distributing leaflets in which case i am glad i posted, i have lots to think about and need to plan this a bit better me thinks :)

    Thank you everyone

  • If you've got one nearby there's Country Markets (used to be WI Markets). A relative of mine sold home-produced cakes etc every week at one of these for years.
