flavouring sweetner

hi,

i had a coofee at my friends yesterday and she put in "vanilla sugar" which she had made herslf by putting sugar in a jar with a vanilla pod. it gave the coffee a lovely taste, but as i'm on slimming world i was wondering if anyone knew if it would work the same with sweetner (the powdered stuff in the jars)

thanks,

woas.

If its granular like sugar I don't see why not.

Put some of the sweetener in a washed out jam jar with a vanilla pod and give it ago.
lets us know if it works.

Sounds really nice. I wonder if the sugar would be nice in cakes too?

my friend said she uses it in baking too, in victoria sponges etc, and one pod will flavour a whole bag of sugar, and you can still use the pod in cooking after. she said you can buy it ready flavoured but that its expensive which is why she does it herself.

It will take a few weeks for the vanilla to fully permeate through the sweetener ... so don't expect instant results :)

I wonder if you can use it to make custard

You can certainly use vanilla sugar to make custard. If you normally use sweetener to make custard, then yes - vanilla sweetener will work :D

I have a permanent jar of vanilla sugar on the go. I use the expensive vanilla pods to make a custard for home-made ice cream or panna cotta. I dry and reuse a couple of times, then shove the old pods in a jam jar of caster sugar. Even used pods will give up some vanilla flavour ... eventually.

OS vanilla pods - 101 uses :rotfl:

  • well i put a small amount of sweetner in a small jam jar with a vanilla pod, had a whiff of it today and it smells gorgeous, it needs a bit longer, but could taste it in my coffee, so going to try a full jar next. thanks for all your help.

If you want instant vanilla sugar then put granulated sugar and a vanilla pod into your blender/food processor and whizz for a few mins ;)

I always keep a vanilla pod in my caster sugar jar to let the flavour infuse, but they do dry out after a while and become hard, so no good to use in anything else. Alternatively, you could remove the seeds first to use in custard/ice cream or whatever, and then place the case in the sugar pot for a more subtle flavour.
