University Interview Advice Needed???!!!??

Hiya,

I need some advice, I applied in january to go to university and as I had one spot left I decided I would apply for a Law course as I thought I would take a shot at it. A couple of days back I've had a letter inviting me for an interview on wednesday. As I'm going in as a mature student I'm a bit nervous about the interview and although it sounds silly, I'm wondering should I wear a suit and tie and is there anything else that I could do to increase my chances of getting in???? as I dont want to blow it before I arrive.

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Dan

Yes you should wear a suit, it shows you have bothered to make an effort in an interview.

take a cv if you have one and just relax, dont talk too much in the interview 'digging holes for youself' just take it easy and be yourself.
All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.
  • Yes do wear a suit and tie. And have a good firm handshake and eye contact at the ready.

They usually ask why you chose Law so have a concise answer prepared. Try to show enthusiasm but not too overly keen to impress. As a potential mature student they may ask if this is a change of career or something along those lines too and how you might use your skills from your career as a student... anything to do with sticking to deadlines and self-directed study is good to drop into your answer.

    Best of luck!

Re read your UCAS Personal Statement and be prepared to expand on what you wrote in it.

Might also be worthwhile posting this on the Students Board.

Only wanted to add - best of luck!
  • hi danny,

One of the main problems unis have is with students who drop out early, especially before 1 December, as they then don't get any funding.

So while they want to widen participation by recruiting mature students etc, you should be prepared to convince the interviewers that you are worth a place ahead of a student straight from school.

Otherwise, prepare as for any other interview - with more life experience, you could well have an edge.

And yes, safer to wear a suit even if academics rarely do.

can't add advice on the interview, but wish you lots of luck with your interview, I will hopefully be going through what you're going through, also as a mature student this time next year, so best of luck, give it your best shot, wear a suit, and post back and let us know how you get on.

As I work in law, can empathise with what you are going to study - have an answer prepared as to what you are going to do when you finish your degree maybe? Relate what you have done in your past life to how you can tie that in with returning to studying, have you worked to deadlines, had to motivate yourself, that sort of thing?

I quite agree, although this should all have been covered in the Personal Statement.
  • Hiya, just a quick note to say I got offered a place at the interview :-) Thanks for all your advice
