Hi
I usually buy the tins of value custard for 25p but have noticed that there are sachets of 8p instant custard that you mix with water. Has anyone tried these? do they make as nice a custard as the stuff in the tins?
Thanks,
Hayley

hi ive found that the cheaper instant custard is just as nice just add a little less water than what it says on the packet to make it a bit thicker and u could also add water to make it to the consistency you like it!0

I use the instant custard too it is really quick and easy to do, and lower in calories than the tinned ( always a bonus) - I also have a tin of birds custard for special occassions and for adding to biscuit recipesBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I use this too, but would say that the Asda own brand is horrid. The Sainsburys and Tesco ones are good though. Agree that you need to put less water than it says on the packet. I always use a hand blender to do mine though as it can be harder to mix than Birds.0

I've always used Birds Custard powder, with milk or soya milk. I don't use sugar but sometimes put a small spoon of syrup in. and have lately started doing it in the microwave...easy and cheaper than tinned custardGC - Oct £36.17/£31

I agree with Gracie
We use either Mr T's own brand or Bird's custard powder.
Put 2 heaped dessertspoons of powder into a tall jug, and mix in the same amount of sugar. This seems to help with not having lumps. Then, slowly mix in 1 pint of milk. Put into the microwave, on full, for 4-5 minutes, stirring vigorously each minute and watching carefully for the last couple.
Just be careful because hot custard sometimes reacts explosively to a cold metal spoon.
However, with this method, you can make more or less, according to the number of people having pudding and leftovers can be made into a little banana custard0
