Can you work 9 straight days?

Just out of interest, my employer has me in from this Thursday through until the following Friday with no days off...on a 8 and a half hour shift.

Is this actually legal?

    From www.direct.gov.uk ............

    Weekly rest - the 'weekend'

If you're an adult worker you usually have the right to 24 hours clear of work each week or 48 hours clear each fortnight.
If you're a young worker (see above), you must have at least 48 hours clear of work every week. If the nature of the job makes it unavoidable, e.g. if you work split shifts, then the 48 hours could be reduced to 36 hours so long as time off is given later in compensation.

I used to work shifts, and that was one of the unfortunate pains. I remember working 10 straight days, which was hell. its just one of those things you have to live with working shifts.

As long as you are getting your 48 hour rest period in both weeks no laws are being broken. ( there is a little more to it than that but that is the simple version)

    Enjoy your 8 day stint.
  • Yes it is legal. Say if your working week starts on Sunday... they give you Sunday and Monday off in the first week, then you work Tuesday through till a week on Thursday. Having Friday and Saturday off for the second week.
  • That's the trouble with the Working Time directive - it protects office workers from stuff they don't do anyway, but has exceptions for shift workers! The WTD is a waste of time!
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?
