From a management point of view...

You went off sick when you weren't
The next week you went awol
Then you went straight on leave...so they have no way of knowing whether you are still AWOL or on leave.

You're back from holiday, and haven't responded to any of the messages or the letter.

Do you not need or want the job?
  • I was off sick for 3 days with cold/flu and was due to go on holiday the week after, I was told I needed to go back into work in order for my self certified sick to stop before proceeding on holiday. I think you really need to go and see your employer it is the right thing to do.

"Told" but was this in your written contract or just made up on the spot? Seems unreasonable to me. If you were due to fly out early on a Saturday morning, how are you supposed to go in to show you are fit after being self-certified sick from the Wednesday?

I can never understand why people feel it necessary to reply simply to "tell the OP off" - he knows he's done wrong, he's clearly said that and is it really our place to tell him that anyway? He came asking for advice about the situation now, what he should do now, not what he should have done then.

OP - I personally would get in touch with them ASAP and see if this can be resolved in any way. Ignoring it is not the answer now, even if you don't get the job back you need to try and get a reference off them.

ETA - I would like to add that in the future, if there is anything ever wrong with your wife and you need to be off work, you ring and tell them that. Don't tell them you're ill when you're not as if they find out it will always go against you :)

Good luck, hope you get it sorted :)

  • Agree with Zazen999.

Its not a playground people are actually trying to run a business here.

What about your colleagues who have to pick up your work. I am sure everyone would be sympathectic to your position but honestly you sound like you don't deserve a second chance.

By all means you have the right of appeal but you need to come up with something really significant to appeal against. I am sorry but unless you can't talk, can't write and can't leave a message with anyone then you have breached your contract. Read the bit about what your obligations are when you cannot attend work.

It's not telling off....it's pointing out that 'having no intention of contacting the company as they feel too uncomfortable' [paraphrased] is the fastest way to having no job at all. Not a problem if the OP doesn't want or need the job.

Yeah and I appreciate that but some posters did "tell him off" without giving much advice as to how to resolve it and I don't understand why they do that? I don't know, maybe it's just me but I wouldn't post just to point out that what they'd done is wrong, they know that. I only post if I feel I can provide some help to resolve the situation :)
