Gym Membership Help?

I have regrettably signed up to a local gym with me and my partner and for the first few weeks we went enough to say we were getting our moneys worth then my car decided it wanted a new gearbox and was off the road for 3 months due to me not having the money to fix and always working. I signed up for a 6 month contract which you might say is not long but i have been paying for 2 people which worked out £70 a month. After the 3rd month i stopped the direct debit due to me having other bad luck. I have now got a debt collection agency after me for £542 due to charges and the gym applying charges.
So i am just a little annoyed in myself and wondering is there anyway in which i can bring this total down or am i stuck because i signed a contract and have only used 2 months worth of it but getting billed for 6.
Any shed of light would be much appreciated
Thanks

i did the same thing, as my dance classes stopped and then i stopped going. a debt agency called and said i owed around £600!! i told them i wanted to continue my membership and the amount dropped to the 3 months worth that i missed. i have paid that off now, and am free to cancel my membership with a months notice. i dont know if you can clear the whole amount any other way though, hopefully someone else can give you more advice!Feb /make £5 a day Challenge £32.28/£120
