mobile phone biils.

ME and H have £75 p/m contrancts between us. But he has lost his job. We can't afford them. What will the mobile companies do? I know they will cut the mobiles off, but can they do anything else?

thanks

  • No, we tried but they won't let us as we are in a contract that won't end until Jan next year. And we can't even afford £10 each.we need to get rid of them totally

Are they 18 month or 12 month contracts? I'm pretty sure that 6 months into a contract, you're allowed to alter the tariff?

Mobile phone Companies are notoriously difficult to negociate with. However, one way that I have used succesfully is to talk with the competition:

Five years ago, I was 'tied into' an O2 contract at £35 a month, and O2 would not initially allow me to change, so I went, virtually next door, to the Vodafone shop, who told me that there would be no problem in 'migrating' with the same number to a cheaper Vodafone tarrif. Armed with this information, I went back to O2, who not only reduced my tariff to £17.00 a month, but also gave me a free 'upgrade'.
Two years later, when I was declared bankrupt, I went back to O2 to ask if I could convert to a PAYG, on the same number. Their Customer Service department contacted me and, because I had been a customer for so long (10+ years) they gave me a 'loyalty bonus' of £75 credit and changed my tariff to £7.50 a month (Discount 100) with 100 free minutes a month. The net result was that I paid nothing for a year and still only pay £8.50 (slightly less with the reduced VAT) a month.
I know it may not work for everyone, but it has, certainly, worked for me, so why not try it yourself, jb ?

    Good luck.

Nope I was told when I entered my 18 month contract that I could change it after 12 months, ring up to attempt to do this and they said a big flat no. When I explained that when I had taken out the contract this was explained to me, they said that they had changed their terms and conditions and had the right to do this at any time!

Sorry not much help to the OP however I will be following this thread with interest.

  • They are both 18 months. I will ring again and say we can't pay. Lets face it mobile bills is the least of my worries right now, and see what they say. I will let you know what they say.

Rog: I will try what you suggested thanks
