Having been waiting ages for one of these, and finally come within 'er indoors' budget. Usually about £200 for a 32gB unit, these are retailing at £80.49. For all you PC nuts (i.e. me!) , this is a spanking deal- stick your windows install on it, and it starts up in seconds. http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?SAM-SSD30G

Sorry to reply to my own thread, but I was just going to go and pick one up, and found there is little or no difference in speed if Using Windows Vista, as it is not optimized for SSD drives. XP is ok, as is anyone running Windows7 Beta.:rolleyes:0

what i did a few months ago for my server which is an old laptop is buy a CF card and an CF-to-IDE adaptor and stuck Windows on there. Worked out about £50 for 8Gb.
There are two types of memory used in SSDs (can't remember what they're called - but one is single cell and other multiple). Anyway, the single has a longer life/more reliability. I also configured Microsoft's file based write filter (FBWF) to prevent Windows hammering the SSD.
Works a treat - and agreed, XP boots in seconds. The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster!

ah - just looked at the link-yes it's SLC - note the OCZ for even less at the bottom of the page - avoid because it's MLC.The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster!

These are still cheap SSDs and are not the super dupa one's0

The £99 is MLC though, apparently not as good as SLC.0

That's right - performance and reliability are compromised with MLC. Probably insignificant for most, but not good enough for my home server which runs 24/7The thanks button is here to the right.
