annual leave entitlement

Just seen on another post somewhere that annual leave entitlement is changing from 4.8 weeks to 5.6 weeks per year as of 1st april.

I have worked at my job for over 2yrs and thought I was only entitled to 4 weeks leave which worked out at 8 days as I only do 2 days a week.
Ive already lost 3 days equal to 1.5 weeks off by not knowing this, wouldve been nice if they'd told me

Anyway just thought Id make sure you all knew what your entitled to so you dot work extra for no reason!!

  • Four full weeks leave is what a full-timer gets.

If you normally work 2 days a week then you get four weeks of two days, whcih is 8 in total.

I may be wrong but the way I understand it, is that the annual leave entitlement includes bank holidays. So if you get bank holidays (that fall on your 2 days a week) off & paid for plus your pro-rated 4 weeks leave a year, then you are getting the full entitlement and haven't lost anything.

    Hope that makes sense!

Yes that is correct. The statutory limit is 24 days per year currently, 20 days per year + 4 bank holidays. This is increasing in April to 20 days + 8 bank holidays.

So, if you all ready recieve bank holidays as days off then you are getting the correct amount of days

Tamsin is correct in original post. The current entitlement is 4.8 weeks = 24 days a year for a full-time (5 days/week) worker. It increases on 1 April to 5.6 = 28 days a year.

Mancitychick has mentioned bank holidays. These may be included in the holiday entitlement.

A worker doing 2 days/week would currently be entitled to 9.6 days paid leave (which can't be rounded down to 9 or 9.5 days).

That will increase to 11.2 days (and again can't be rounded down to 11).

    This bank holiday thing ....

As I wrote in earlier post, bank holidays may be included. They are included if the employer chooses to include them. There is no statutory entitlement to bank holiday pay.

History - the original entitlement was 4 weeks (20 days) for a 5-day/week person. This also allowed employers to choose to include BHs. The government hadn't really intended that low number of days (only 12 plus the BHs). So, as there are 8 BHs in a calendar year, they decided to increase allowance to 5.6 weeks (28 days) - but did it in two stages, 4 days at a time, in order to ease it in.
