council tax help please.

    I would have been the person liable to pay the council tax, however due to the lenght of time since I moved out in 2001 I did not think this would be still enforceable?.
    Mortgage £25,789.17/£24,918.14/£22,921.47
    Pay off £20k by Xmas 2010 - £16,360.00

    There is no statue of limitations on Council Tax , the debt remains until it is either paid in full or otherwise cleared in full.

    The only limit is that the Council must apply for a Liability Order within 6 years of the bill being issued if they wish to use legal powers to recover the money, if they don't gain the Liability Order they can still chase the money but have no legal powers to force payment.
    I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
