Flatmate ruining my credit rating?

Hi, I've got a question, 1 of my housemates is in debt up to his eyeballs and the household is constantly plagued by phonecalls from a credit card and another store card looking for him.

I don't know the exact extent or status of his debt but I'm concerned that living at the same address is ruining my credit rating. I've been here for 6 months but I'm planning to buy a house in the next few months and I don't want to discover that after being very good and debt free (almost) for years it's all for nothing!

Do you have any linked bills or other accounts?

If not then the only problems you may have are:
    1. Bailiffs harassing you for your house mates debts
    2. Some companies refusing to give you credit i.e. catalogue companies

Debts are linked to the person not the address.

I do however suggest you check your housemate hasn't linked you to any off their accounts.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

if you sign up with www.quidco.com you can order a free copy of your creidit score from Experien (just have to remember to stop the trial before a month is up). This will show if there is any outstanding debts he has put linked with you.

  • Thanks, I don't think he's at the bailiff stage yet but both of our names are on the council tax bill which we pay regularly. Does that count?

Council Tax is fine as it as no links with anything to do with your credit record.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Experian are advertising this on their home page with no mention of quidco. Looks like the offer is not related to the cashback site at all.

Yeah you are right, I signed up recently with Experian and the offer is exactly the same on their website so need to use Quidco.

Yes, but if you sign up by going through Quidco or TopCashBack you get given seven pounds for taking up your free trial. Even if you don't need the dosh, you might give it to your poor indebted flatmate! (As if!)
