Look at the resolution - it's not HD Ready.

You can feed it a high-def (HD) signal, but it won't be displayed properly because the set's resolution is less than 1280x720. It'll just strip infomation off until it's reduced it to a size it can cope with.

HD TVs are like the full unabridged version of a book, glorious works of art. Standard definition (SD) TVs are like abridged versions. Same story, same words used, just less of them in SD and therefore ultimately worse quality.
  • And to be 100% FAIR to DABS they make no such 'HD ready' claims, indeed they explicitly state on the Specification page:

"HD Ready ? Not HD Ready"

So just an over enthusiastic recommendation.

It's a shame for the consumer marketplace that there is so much confusion.

I'd still not recommend buying a HD ready plasma. The premium you'll pay for it over non HD plasma like this amounts to quite a lot still.

I'd recommend buying, this, well, the 42" Panasonic in richersounds.com is what I'd go for really - and using that for 3 yrs. By the time HD is properly propagated you'll have had a lot of use from the current display, and it's safe to say that 2009's technology will be much improved, and a lot cheaper too.

So, do you spend £2000 now on a HD ready plasma?

I'd personally spend £1000 now on something that's adequate, then £1000 again in a few years... Put it this way, in 2009 I'd rather have £1000 to spend on a new display than be using a £2000 display from 2006. I'll also have the 2006 display to demote to the bedroom. :)

We're bargain hunters here. What's we don't need HD till freeview have adopted it!
