Fraud probe begins at AIG UK arm
breaking news
The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has launched a probe into suspected financial irregularities in the UK by the American International Group (AIG).
The investigation - in co-ordination with the City watchdog the Financial Services Authority - is focused on the firm's financial products arm.
AIG's insurance operations are not affected, the SFO said.
AIG is getting about $150bn (£105bn) in help from the US government, in a rescue package to keep it afloat.
"It is right for us to look into the UK operations of AIG Financial Products Corp to determine if there has been criminal conduct," said the director of the Serious Fraud Office, Richard Alderman.
"We will use our full range of powers to seek information and to speak to those with an inside knowledge of the company's operations."

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.
