Anyone work for morrisons?

Does anyone work for Morrisons? I asked and although they have no vacancies at the moment I got an application form. I got chatting to the lady on customer services and she said you start on 5.73 per hour so min wage and if work on checkouts for 6 hours a day you only get a 15 min break in that time to include getting to and from the canteen, having some lunch/hot drink plus a trip to the loo!

Does this sound right? Im sure I read somewhere that if you work 6 hours you are entitled to a half hour eating break which sounds more acceptable.

  • if i remember correctly from when i used to work in a supermarket many moons ago, if you worked 4 hours you were entitled to a 15 min break, up to 6 hours a half hour break and anything above 8 hours you were entittled to two 15min breaks and an hour unpaid lunch break.

thats going back about 5 years though so i dont know whats changed.

beautiful, doesn't even have a job and already trying to make trouble.

Whatever happened to being grateful for having a job and getting stuck into it?

If Morrisons ware really so low, we should consider shopping elsewhere. Consider the low standards that inevitably come with low paid staff.

Legally you are entitled to a 20 min break if you work a shift of more than 6 hours. Less than 6 hours and they don't have to give you a break at all.

Next you'll be saying employees should be servile and accept any scraps their master throws in their direction. Perhaps we could revert to good old victorian work values.

Is a legal rest break too much to hope for?
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
  • My friend used to be a manager at morrisons so i will email and ask him for you. As for the silly comments, ignore them. I hardly think that 30 minutes break is unreasonable after 6 hours customer facing work. If that is the case- people working for crap wages with no breaks, I'll be taking my shopping elsewhere too. Imagine if somebody told you in your place of work you could only have 15 minutes all day, people would be up in arms, but as it's a minimum wage job, you're just supposed to put up and shut up, as the implication is you don't earn enough to deserve respect or proper breaks? poor stuff.

Not at all. But if you don't like the terms of the job, don't apply. I for one would be grateful for ANY job that would help pay my mortgage and feed my family.
  • Thank you to those who made helpful and positive comments.
I agree its not too much to ask for a decent break especially when working face to face with customers for a long time especially while handling large amounts of money and obviously needing to concentrate.

In my experience it benefits the company in the long run to have happy and respected staff. I worked for Waitrose for several years before I had my family among other places and know that by having an adequate and fair amount of time to have a break benefits the company in the long run. Unfortunately there are no vacancies there at the moment.

As for the two other comments made by ivrytwr3 and kim yeovil it’s a shame some people feel the need to say such things when they know nothing about me when I simply came on here for the first time today to ask a question as I have been away from the payed work place while bringing up my family/ doing various voluntary work among other things and now returning to the work place.

After making further enquiries its down to the manager at Morrisons how long the break is. I don’t know if it’s the same at every branch or just this one and 15 minutes is what they provide for a 6 hr stint on the checkouts to include getting to and from the canteen which takes approx 5 minutes leaving around ten minutes to quickly grab some lunch, a cuppa and go to the loo.
