Pioneer cease making flat screen tvs

The destruction of supply will come at the top end. Sony stuff is very overpriced IMO. This will make the average good cheaper. You also ignore the deflation always results from new technological advances - how much would a computer as powerful as the one you use now have cost five or ten years ago for example?Anyway, this is a good example of why deflation won't continue to chip prices endlessly down - with destruction of demand comes destruction of supply.Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable. J. K. Galbraith0 -
Interestingly on the lunchtime news it stated Pioneer had made a loss for the 5th consecutive year.....at least I'm reasonably sure that's what was said.
Anyone have any figures?0 -
I've always been of the opinion that if you're watching 'When Britain's Animals go Bad in Afganistan with Ross Kemp's Gangs' it doesn't really matter whether you've got a 88" HD plasma or one of those massive boxes from the '80s.
I guess a lot of people watch films though, so a good TV is quite important. I don't watch a lot of TV on the basis that most programming seems to assume I have the intellect of a knat, so until they improve that I'll stick to the one my parents gave me 8 years ago when they got a new one. It weighs about the same as the Ukraine.
quite. i only use mine to run up my electricity bill when i have a bit of money left over at the end of the month, just to ensure that i retain no savings whatsoever. it seems to work quite well.0 -

It was phrase "Pioneer have made a loss for the 5th consecutive year, it blamed the lack of sales of TV's and Car audio"
Rather vague, but seems to encompass the business as a whole rather than an individual part, but when did reports every worry about fact?0 -
http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/content/press/news/corporate_announcement_2009.htmlCorporate Announcement: 12 February 2009
Pioneer has announced that it wishes to primarily focus on car electronics, navigation and audio A/V products.
In the future, Pioneer will concentrate its investments and commercial efforts on these fields as well as on pro-DJ products. As you may know, these are the domains in which Pioneer historically has always held a strong market position with top-class products. New product introductions will follow soon.
This means that Pioneer will withdraw from the flat screen market, both plasma and LCD, by March 2010. We regret that we will no longer be able to offer these highly appreciated products in the future.
Naturally we will continue to guarantee the reputable quality of our products. This also means that the after-sale service will be fully maintained so that all customers will be able to continue to benefit from the applicable Pioneer warranties. In other words, you can continue to count on Pioneer.
We trust that you understand this decision. We thank you for your confidence in the Pioneer products.

not as daft as it sounds,in a house we have tv's cd players, surround cinema systems and computers.New_Gold_Dream wrote: »I find that incredible from a benchmark company.
people will want all this in there car and pioneer are also at the forefront with in car electronics.0 -
Its probably sensible. Plasma tvs are going to plummet even more in price soon, and the quality of cheaper ones is becoming much better at a low cost. Unless Pioneer want to sink millions into R and D on OLED screens or similar they'd just end up competing at much lower margins in a very crowded tv market.
Something tells me that the wind is not blowing the way of the £1500 tv either. No matter how good the black levels are.0 -
My old fashioned "normal" tele (14") that we have in the bedroom broke last week (got dropped on a tiled floor:eek: )
Went to buy a new one and I can't believe how expensive these new fangled flat screen jobbies are!
We only want a little one, I only have it on when I'm doing my make up and hair in the morning to catch the news. But for anything mildly decent they're over £150 quid! The "old fashioned" ones were about £75 when my sister bought a similar size one a few years ago.
Not sure whether to splash out and buy a new one, or look for an old one that someone is giving away. Bearing in mind my last one went on for 10 years and had life in it yet it if wasn't for a clumsy boyfriend......
I did see a £99 on in Argos, but being totally technologically challenged I imagine that this one from some unknown brand will be useless?0 -
The Eu are bringing in incredibly harsh rules to cut Co2 gasses over the coming years and the EU is setting their targets specifically on Plasmas screens being the most inefficient and dirtiest thing (carbon wise) in the house.
You'll ot et a Plasma for love nor money in the next few years across the EU as a result - that's a large market just lost to Pioneer who primarily specialised in plasma (although they did dable in LCD, but not as much as Sony, LG, etc).
The economic climate, unstable currencies, a good few years of recession across the world and it makes sense to cut their losses now. The other big producers are also suffering. Sony made a big loss this year too but is too proud to admit defeat. The Chinease Dragon is certainly no longer the giant fire ball it once was.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0
