Help on whether to challenge a fixed penalty ticket

Hi,
This may not be the correct place to post this but I'm not sure where else to ask and I know there are some really savvy people on this site who may be able to help
I have been extremely busy over the last few months and forgot to renew my tax disc on the car. However I applied online via DVLA and paid for it.
Whilst waiting for this to arrive (past the end date of the old disc) my car has been parked on the street. The very day after paying for my tax disc I received at fixed penalty on my windscreen issued at 04.00 in the morning.
My question is as I technically had paid for the tax I am covered and as such the penalty is illegal and thus could I potentially challenge it. However to temper this I am also aware that I need to display a valid tax disc on my car.
Can anyone give me some thoughts on the matter? Is it worth challenging or a waste of time?
Anyone have a similar experience?
Thanks,
Bryan

I believe you are required to display a valid tax disc if the vehicle is parked or driven on the public highway. You could try and appeal, but I suspect the fact the car did not display a valid tax disc at the time the inspector visited will mean the penalty is legal.
