OVERPAYMENT !! Please Help

i have just received a letter from my previous employer stating that i have been overpayed by over £2000. This letter states i should send a cheque for the full amount. I didnt realise i was over paid. My previous job was Airline cabin Crew - because of the duty hours, commission and flight pay often it would take months for you to be paid from one flight to the next - for a flight in august you could sometimes not see it in your wage until sept/oct. When the payments were made into my account i thought that they were monies owed and included holiday payments that i had not received. I left this employment in August. In October i received a letter from them stating i had been over paid £600 and they would recover it from my next 2 salaries. As i had left the company i phoned and spoke to the managers and they explained that i should ignore the letter - payroll had relocated to india - and loads of mistakes were being made - the managers thought it was extremely funny and were laughing down the phone with me. I therefore thought nothing of it. I have not received a pay slip since i left - and only received my P45 in december - 4 months after i had left - they have now sent me a letter 6 months after i left saying i need to pay back the overpayment of over £2000 - PLEASE HELP - i dont know where i stand !!

Ask for proof that you have been overpaid. If there has been an overpayment you are legally bound to pay it back, but they have to give you time to pay. I once had an overpayment of nearly £1,000 and I paid it back at £20 a month for about 4 years. So if you do owe the money make them a very low offer.0
