No job and mounting debt!!

Hi, I have read the page for newbies but it seems to me that it is to assist people who are in work. I have been out of work now for four months and it does not look like it is going to pickup for another month at least.

I am renting a flat in Brighton which is a huge expense but have now signed on and will be okay with that for another eight weeks or so until it drops to about two thirds of the cost.

I took out a contract lease on a car which costs me 320 pounds a month and I need this for when I start work again.

I have about 30 thousand now on credit cards and a bank loan and no way of paying it until I am back at work.

What I want to know is can I ask for a breathing space on these cards and loans?

I am a mechanical and electrical project manager within the water industry so it is just a matter of time before I get work again.

Thanks for helping in advance, Steve Morris

  • You should get in contact with your credit cards and tell them your current suitation and ask what they can do to help you. With the current suitation with job losses and things as they could stop you getting charges etc or if you can afford a token payment each month even if its jus few pounds a month would be better than none i would speak to them and see what they can do

  • Just for the record Paulinleeds, I have never been out of work since i was eighteen in the last recession and I had no choice to be out of work. I am a professional and am looking for work all over the country and can't do anymore than I am frankly.

I am not scrounging off anyone. I am asking for advice to put my debt on hold until I get a new job start.

Maybe you need to read my request again so that you fully understand what I am asking because I certainly am not scrounging.
I hope that you are on eof the lucky ones and don't have to experience what I am going through now.

    Have a good life.

Why did you take out the contract lease on the car when you haven't got a job yet? that's a lot of money each month. Not ideal timing. How about getting a flatmate to share your flat and the rent.

    Welcome to MSE
I would ring all the company s concerned asap.Just talk them through your situation and ask for a payment holiday if possible.Beware though credit rating is affected i believe.
    Good luck

  • Hi Steve,

im new here also although OH has been on for a while.

i just wonder if its really necessary to have a £320 a month car? surely a cheaper car could still get you to and from (finding) work without crippling you at the same time? it sounds a bit like you need to shave off as much money as possible and that seems the most likely thing to go first with the least impact.

At the top of the board....
I suggest you go to specsavers with your big bonus, however if you did read it and chose to ignore it, then you are rude and ignorant.
