Another references/referees question!

When submitting a referees contact details, do you always need to provide their postal address? This is what I have done in the past, but I was talking to someone who said they would be a referee, but only if they could be contacted by email not post.
Also has any one ever encountered references being requested or given by phone?

References can be by phone email or post - whichever suits the referee really.
Phone references are done in two ways - by using a standard form and ticking boxes or to get a more searching reference. Neither of these are probably good practice but happen widely.0 -
oooh, really? If I can put my referee in as contactable by email that really would make life so much easier!A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0

A prospective employer should always respect the way your referee would prefer to be contacted.
I must say that I would be very reluctant to give a telephone reference. I think it's much easier when you can read it over and give it some consideration, but I am sure other people would find it easier verbally.0 -
I've given my email address for a reference, and was contacted and gave the ref by email - much easier than by post.0

I will only give my email addy for a reference.0
