Curry Powder Question

Options
I have made a curry in my new slow cooker. I just followed the recipe from the booklet that came with the SC. It was for a bog standard beef curry which called for mild curry powder. It made a really tasty curry which we all enjoyed (including DD3).

My question is..... My OH would like it to me a bit more spicier but me and DD would not. Can I just sprinkle in some medium or hot curry powder to OH's portion?

I don't have any medium or hot curry powder atm. So before I rush out to buy some, if you guys think this is possible, I have the following in my cupboard.... Chilli powder, Paprika, Garam Masala and Tandoori Masala. I have never used the last 2 and am bit of a curry virgin so any advice would be greatly appreciated :).

Add chilli powder not curry powder to spice it up. Curry powder needs cooking to not taste odd. Garam Masala has no heat and neither does Paprike.

I add chilli powder to my husbands food all the time, his tastes are abit more spicy than the kids it's works fine.

I tend to scoop our's out first, add the chilli powder to the leftovers and mix it in really well before serving it to the hubby.
  • I bought a grater container from Lidl of dried chilli flakes that can be ground (like a pepper grinder) into food to add heat. I find this better than chilli powder as we don't use enough of it and it loses its heat over time.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
  • I agree with ascot64 that curry powder needs to be cooked first.

One way of adding heat is to put a splash of olive oil in a pan and fry an onion in it. As the onion browns, add 1/2 teaspoon chilli powder and 1/4 teaspoon cumin. Fry for another couple of minutes to cook the spices and then pop this on top of the serving to be spiced up.

You might need to experiment with the amounts.
  • Thanks for the advice folks :). OH tried some chilli powder on his pork & pineapple curry this evening and it was must more suited to his palette :D.
  • 'Chilli Powder' usually contains other things like cumin, oregano, garlic/onion powder, salt etc etc. so it wouldn't be my choice for just adding heat. Check the label to see if the brand you're actually using is just 100% chilli or a mixture of things.

Cayenne pepper or chilli flakes would be the best thing IMO. Out of the two, I'd get chilli flakes, because they are also great sprinkled over pasta dishes.
  • Would anyone be willing to share this recipe please. Thanks.
  • I have to spice up my portions because DH does not like hot spices. I use chili sauce, for example Encona Scotch Bonnet. It mixes in easily and there's no uncooked taste. I will try the straight chili powder as well.

Btw, I find Value curry powder to be excellent.
