Potentially lost interview chance?

I was contacted a couple of weeks ago by HR for a well known bank to apply for a specific role within their organisation (they came across my CV on an online jobs board). I applied for the role and later that day was contacted to book a telephone interview the next day. I had the interview which was successful, and then yesterday recieved a call to go for interview tomorrow. I explained that I was going on holiday for a week (from this evening) that I would be available from a week today. They said they would contact me with another date. I called today before leaving for my hols to check on progress. I was told they had no future slots as of yet, but would get in touch when they are running the next round. Then before hanging up, said, that's if they need to as they may hire someone from tomorrows interviews.

I am gutted to have missed the opportunity, is it normal for them to do this? do they expect everyone to be available at such short notice? Does it sound like I have missed the boat? SHould I have cancelled my holiday to attend - even though this would not guarantee a job?

Any insight would be appreciated

    Hi,

Sorry to hear you missed the interview date. Some companies need a job doing and if they find someone they are happy to employ, they will take them on. I suppose it depends on the company really, they may not have a formal structure for interviews and applications and timescales, so you may miss out if you are not available for interview immediately.

I hope you can make the interview next time you are invited.

    Good luck!

  • Hi Miss PnQ,

It's hard enough for employers to get a date when the interviewers can all make it, let alone the candidates!

So it's almost inevitable that someone will miss out on the opportunity. But unless it was the job you always wanted, certainly not worth cancelling a holiday for - imagine how gutted you would feel if you had cancelled your holiday, lost all that money as your insurance wouldn't cover it, and then still not got the job.

And sometimes strange things happen - they might not find the right person, or the person may accept the offer, use it to get a rise where they work at present, and not take up the job - in which case, you might be back in the frame.

And it might be a lucky escape, depending on which bank it was;) .

You got an interview this time, you'll get one again - and next time, hopefully, you'll get the job.

    That made me laugh.
