Pocket GPS World - free downloads to stop

Options
I've just been on the pocket gps site (http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/) and noticed that after the January downloads (for speed camera database), you will have to subscribe to get future releases. This will be £2 a month or £19 pa. Does anyone know of another site that offers these as a POI for free? I use a Garmin i3.

I don't think so. The database provided by PocketGPS is made up of entries sent in by people that use the POI's. So there's no way you'd get exactly the same thing from anywhere else unless they'd stolen it from PocketGPS.

The charge is actually so they can take on a full time staff member to check the database, do updates and verify camera positions and so on. I for one would be happy to spend £2 a month to get improved quality from this already excellent resource.

Having said that, anyone that sent in a camera location before they made this change will get a free lifetime subscription to the database. Happily I'm one of those people, although £2 a month is nothing really, I would just need to buy half a magazine less a month.

could always put £2 in a pot each month, then the first time you get hit by a speedcam not covered in the database you have the fine covered(but not the insurance or future offences)?
  • I am going to download the file every 6 months. The camera locations dont change that often.

I was working on a similar theory too, happy to pay every now and again and I don't rely on Garmin solely for warnings, I think it's a happy medium

The options are to subscribe at £2 per month or £19 for a year, there isn't a "I'll pay £2 every 6 months" option.

I think that the content will be very difficult to protect from duplication.
  • What I meant was, I'll buy an update in June and January making a total of £4 per year for two files.

Some people are working on alternative free databases:-

Seems to be a slow process though, so the more people submit camera locations the better.
  • Don't forget that you can download the January version of the Camera database through to the end of February for free, from Pocket GPS site
