"The Party is over" (in Clapham-London) BBC R4 @ 11:00

If you say Clapham to me, I tend to think "Up the Junction" not posh "Southside" (of the Common).

Clapham is an interesting place, just look at the size of the decaying original houses as you come SW from the City down past "The Oval". I wonder how many servants (au pair girls) you needed to run one of these establishments when first built?

Clapham was one of the original suburbs - it was near enough to "The City" for the new rich and successful to commute by horse in the pre railway days.

[In those days the old landed money, Jane Austin style, did not need to work and lived on their rents in their country seat (in the summer?)]

The BBC did a little documentry about the area called Abbeville three years ago
[Aint that in N.France]. so hopefully there will be a bit of "compare and contrast".

Harry,

PN Any chance of you doing a commentary?
I've got to go out on a job;)

NDG any chance of coming out of "retirement" to contribute your analysis?

    So nobody else listened?
Driving round the M25 while listening is a bit distracting but I realised that I had heard the original programme.
Subconsciously it must have been one of the factors that made me decide that those in the housing market were going mad. (A kitchen is for cooking good food, it is not something to trade in every 18 months to keep up with the Joneses).

The most level headed contributor was the bin man. He got around London the fastest on a bike, not a Merc, while keeping fit.
He could monitor the state of the economy by the weight of the Champagne bottles in the recycling. (A bit like Mr Dow-Jones counting the number of factories with smoking chimneys).

Still available for a week on "listen again"
