Unemployment figures not true reflection?

A report on timesonline saying that jobless total at 1.97 million below what was expected. However, i know of lots of self-employed who are not working at the moment and cannot claim unemployment benefit due to them not paying a Class 4 stamp. Would I be right in saying that they are not included in this figure? The cynic in me says that the figure is definitely a lot more.

But this has always been the case. Being self employed doesn't mean being occupied 100% of the time.
The figures don't include all the illegal immigrants in this country who are not working either now.0 -
Only those signing on get counted.
All us over 50 somethings often get a bribe, in addition to redundancy. in the form of a pension lump sum and a reduced monthly pension = No JSA.
If we have enough National Insurance payments, there is no reason I can think of for signing on. Even if we don't have enough "stamps", it is cheaper to "go self employed", even as a white van driver you will make more than JSA and have wheels for any (unlikely) job interview.0 -
Also add the 3 million on the sick, and all those over 50 years od who can't sign on and the true unemployment figures are 7 or 8 millionthriftybabe wrote: »A report on timesonline saying that jobless total at 1.97 million below what was expected. Nicked from HPC.
6.3% unemployment
26% (ish) of working age people are not employed at all!0 -
I was expecting the figures to be a lot heavier than that considering all the redundancies announced in december.
The longterm average was around 1.6m so really this recession so far has not taken away that many jobs.
You can be assured that the true unemployment rate in this country is at the very least 3x the stated amount for the points highlighted above.0 -

Oh so you inferring that all the stay at home housewives are un-employed
Not mentioning the retired on a pension (don't need to work, thankyou). 'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
I am registered as self-employed, because I have an online income keeping me going. And I wouldn't get any benefits because I have savings. So I am off their radar, even though I am looking for full-time permanent work.0

I'm off the radar too as I am officially classed as a carer, even though, I too am looking for work.
Well actually, I could be classed as a student now as well as a carer and looking for work.
Confuzzled? I am!We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0
