JSA claim help

I am asking this for my son who is 22 and has a mortgage.

He lost his job last month but hasn't claimed JSA because his girlfriend has been using his bank account for payments from her very part-time very low level small item sales business.

He believes he will have to produce his bank statements to claim, is that the case? It could look like income.

He needs to get the JSA to get mortgage/council tax help.

I can't advise him as I have no experience of claiming benefits

Comments

  • He can claim JSA Contribution based. He will NOT have to show any bank details as this is NOT means tested.

When he claims ... do not take anything bar his P45 ...

they will want bank stats for claiming help with council tax though. Not sure about mort payment assistance as you can only get this with income based JSA and you don't get this until after being on contributions based JSA for 6 months. Not at that stage yet ourselves.

You can claim help with mortgage interest after 13 weeks, nowadays.
  • My son will be pleased to have this info and I'm suggesting he asks his lender for a payment holiday on the mortgage until the 13 weeks passes.

Hopefully he'll be back in work by then!

But I think that is only when you go onto income based JSA? With Contributions Based JSA you can only get help with council tax (and rent if you are a tenant). We are not able to get any help with our mortgage whilst my dh is on CB JSA. Hoping that we will not have to go as far as claiming IB JSA, fingers crossed my dh will be back in work before then!

    Correct me if wrong though!

This link confirms that help with mort interest is only available to people on income support, income based JSA or income related employment and support allowance. No help with mortgage payments while on contributions based JSA, only help with council tax (if eligible).

  • Just to correct you LV, altho your Conts JSA will run out after 6 months, you could still claim mortgage help from 13 weeks after the start of your original claim. To do this you can get your circumstances "rated" for income-based JSA now by completing form JSA3. As long as you qualify for some income-based JSA ,mortgage help will still be available before the JSA (C) runs out. The two main reasons someone wouldn't get rated for income-based is if they had over £16000 in savings or the aprtner of the Conts Jobseeker is working.
  • Please help me.
I have been on Contributions Based JSA for 11 weeks. I thought I would be able to apply for Mortgage help after 13 weeks, but have been reading various articles which state that only people receiving Income Based JSA can claim this help? I am really confused. Please could somebody help. Thank yiou.
