Hi ALL, PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME ASAP. I AM I AN A RIGHT MESS
I sold me house last year and rented until we found something we liked. Now we have found something i have been knocked back for the mortgage as i have a default against me from december 2008 for british gas. They had my new address and i gota letter from them about an unpaid gas bill from my old house. i wrote to them and heard nothing since. when i have checked my file today they issued teh default. they had my address and didnt write to me to tell me this was gong to happen, infact i have had no correspondance off them in ages so kinda forgot about it - been a busy time i have a 10 week old baby and with moving houses etc it slipped my mind.
Can they do this? Can i ask for it to be removed? I have had no warning it would happen, but they obviously had my new address as they wrote to me there
please help - i now stand to be off the housing ladder due to it . The sellers of the house are asking for my mortgage offer which was all fine and dandy but it expired on 21/1/9 as i had been waiting so long now i have been refused

So do you actuaklly owe British Gas any money or not? If so, how much is it for?

I may be wrong but the best that can happen is that it would be marked as satisfied if you paid now. They wont remove it until 6 years later. But by all means you can appeal to them0

I have no idea to be honest if i owe it or not. Well, we obvioulsy owe something but not sure of the amount We had a lot of issues with them in the last house, ie we had several leaks, were without gas, they dug the road up on 2 occassions due to our supply etc. It is for £709!!
As i say i did have a letter from a debt recovery agency not brithish gas - sorry i didnt make that clear - stating i owed the money so i wrote to them re the amount etc and asked it be passed back to british gas - that was ages ago. They did wrote to say the debt was being passed back to BG but it was a standard letter. I dont have the letter anymore have looked for it
Im not making excuses but it truely did slip my mind to chase it - i have had a new baby, started a new job, moved house and my father almost died twice in the space of 12 months. not to mention several health worries of my own.
I stupidly assummed as i had asked the debt to be passed back to them i would hear from BG in time, obviously not.
I know i have brought this on myself and dont expect anyones sympathy but can they just issue a default notice like that?
As i stands i have no chance of getting the mortgage and stand to loose teh house if it isnt sorted soon0 -
i will gladly arrange to pay the money and then dispute it latr if it means i can get this default notice removed. To top it all off to i am just about to start studying for my CeMAP - with teh default notice i wont be able to get a job as you need a clear credit file.0

hello, i hate to be the bearer of bad news but british gas are one of the ones who dont negotiate these matters, they gave me a default after a short time of not paying my bill and refused to remove it after i paid the bill in full. my own fault and i try to pay everything in time now. sorry you have had a bad time hun, things can only get betterProud to be dealing with my debts Nerd #992 LBM 30.06.08 Debt [strike]£3292[/strike] £1646 (50% paid, all interest free) Sealed pot member #434 £65.09 & Virtual sealed pot member #001 £82.07+£33.04+£112.83=£227.94 Gave up smoking 30.01.09 DfDay 01.12.09
Have nothing in your homes that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful (sell it instead)0 -
surely they need to inform you of the intention to place the defualt - or of the default itself?0

I would advise contacting nationaldebtline for this.
As you sent this company a letter, they must have known your address, but they must also have sent you a notice of default for the default to be valid. If you did not receive this default notice then the default on your account should be removed.
If the amount of the gas bill is in dispute, you should also inform them of that. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
Dad Gift 6k ¦ Savings & Inv Tst: £2,500
Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0
Total Owed: £2,270 (+6k) 11/08/20110 -

Thanks George, do you think i will have success?
they have my address as they wrote to me originally stating i owed the money so yes, they do have the address. Plus i gave it to BG when i moved home
Taking stock of the situation loosing the house isnt a biggie as its been on the market for 18 months and in todays climate if i can get this sorted i may be able to get it even cheaper when it is sorted.
I wouldnt be able to stay in this rented house tho as tenants have already been sought out - and i expect the default would make renting impossible?
Its my new job that worries me the FA is waiting for me to move etc before i start work with him but i need to have a clean file in order to work for him.
I will contact them once i am on a break - cant use the phone whilst working but can use the internet - i am in such a fuss i am almost crying at my desk..0 -

Out of interest, why chose this option at this time when most mortgage professional are leaving the industry? It would take time for the business to pick to up for Mortgage Advisers as a newbee without a huge client bank, you would struggle. Sorry as this advise may not be related to your original query0
