Advice, Please, re Faulty Goods

I bought my husband a black cashmere sweater for Christmas from Tesco's. After only 3 or 4 wearings it has developed 2 holes and so I took it back to the store (20 miles away) where I bought it. I wanted a replacement but they did not have any, nor could they get me one from elsewhere. So I asked for my money back but without a receipt (discarded after Christmas), I was told that they will not refund.
By now I was getting a bit irritated, given I had driven 20 miles and it was their fault not mine that the sweater was faulty. But still no joy! Finally I asked for a credit note to use for food in my local Tesco which does not sell clothes and they refused that too. So where do I stand now? I have wasted money on petrol and still have no redress. What next please?

Was it tescos own brand for clothes?
If so I can't see why they would not refund as they would have only sold them for a limited amount of time.
Did you buy it with a credit card? If so take the credit card statement as proof of the purchase. Keeping a receipt is best but you don't need it as proof of purchase.
Sales of goods act 1979 something should cover this. As you would expect it to last longer than that. More info here
Also might like to try head office and see where it gets you.
Hope you get it sorted.

It might be worth checking to see if they can trace the purchase off your clubcard if you have & used one.0

We are going through a similar thing with TK Maxx ,we checked out the Sale of Goods Act 1979,which says:
traders must sell goods that are as described and of satisfactory quality.
If consumers discover that products do not meet these requirements they can reject them and ask for their money back providing they do so quickly. Alternatively, they can request a repair or replacement or claim compensation.
So we are trying a again with this statment included in the letter.Good Luck0
