Help with my late dads work pension

My dad sadly left us and we have uncovered a complete financial mess, he always said he was covered with his pension which he recieved from working at northern Electric for years, now we have found some old paperwork which would seem the same figures he used to talk about but we cant find out who to contact or if it is even still valid

The paperwork we have is from Electricity supply pension scheme which are staements of his personnal benefits

Does anyone have any advice on where to go for info or help

Sorry if this makes no sense but i have never had to deal with this type of thing and it is a nighmare for us at the moment as it looks like he has no coverer for his funeral

  • Sorry to hear about your loss.

You need to contact the trustees of the Scheme to inform them about the death. Contact details should be on the benefit statements. They will deal with the rest and tell you what benefits are payable. It may be that they will need to see a copy of the death certificate before they pay any benefits.

I assume that your dad's pension hadn't come into payment? If so it is likely that a spouse's pension will be payable (assuming he left one) as well as the possibility of other dependants' pensions.
  • Sorry - forgot to add that many schemes will be able to make a cash advance to cover funeral costs - even if you don't have a grant of probate.

    Again, ask the trustees.

Contact these people. If your father has been drawing his pension, then it will be cancelled, but a widow's or dependant's pension may be payable.

If he was over 65 you'll also need to advise the state pension people at https://www.thepensionservice.gov.uk. If your mother is receiving a state pension based on his contributions, her pension should now rise to the same level he was getting.

Does he have bank accounts or other savings and/or investments? Banks will normally allow money to be taken from an account to pay funeral costs even if probate has not been granted.

Did your father leave a will? .

Try asking for some guidance at the CAB.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)
  • Thank you for your advice, yes he was drawing his pension so it looks like we will not have this, will look into seeing if my mum can continue it on.

He has left nothing, unfortunatly my dad was a gambler and never saved or paid anything, looks like the nightmare will continue for a while until we get this sorted

That's made life so very difficult for you and your family. My Dad was also a gambler when younger but thankfully he saw sense in his later years. Hope you get a good result. All the best.
