Food shortages in the 70's recession

I have noticed on some of the posts discussing the 1970's recession that people mention remembering food shortages, and I am wondering what was the cause of that? Was it a lack of petrol for the delivery lorries supplying shops or did we have trouble actually importing foodstuffs?

Nah, it was people buying more stuff than they could ever eat0

Mostly caused by strikes. The 70s wasn't all Ford Capris, Abba and Party Sevens, a lot of it was strikes and shortages and rather dismal brown clothes

I remember shortages of:
- potatoes, price of chips rocketed, home made chips were made with parsnips
- coffee, we had to drink nasty liquid Camp coffee
- sugar
- butter, price went up out of our reach so we used margarine and never went back to butter0 -
And when potatos went back down chips didn't. (I think we've been down this road before?)I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left. :rolleyes:0

There was less choice of food in the 70s supermarkets and grocers only had a fraction of the items you see nowadays.0

bread and sugar i remember.trying to do better in 2012! :j
£20 so far saved for Xmas 2012:T
£8 so far from clothes taken to recycling buyer:T

I remember the sugar shortage - was HORRIFIED at the time. Now a bag lasts me years - only the 'tradesmen' use it :rotfl:A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
