Help! I have a Kenwood Patissier and last night I was kneading some bread dough with the dough hook attachment and the phone rang. I answered it and got talking and completely forgot that the machine was on. I realised as I put the phone down after about 35 minutes that I'd forgotten it and when I went into the kitchen the machine was still going but it was REALLY hot and there was this blue hazy smoke coming out of it and it smelled really bad. I switched off and unplugged and left it. Just tried to use it again now and nothing. Completely unresponsive. I've changed the fuse in the plug but that hasn't done anything. Have I burned out the motor and what can I do if I have? It's over 2 years old so I can't send it back! I am really annoyed with myself because I LOVE my patissier and use it almost daily. What do you think? (other than that I am an idiot, but for that I blame the menopause!)

I'd ring Kenwood and see if they do repairs or if they can recommend anyone in your area who'll fix it. I'm sure they'll be able to suggest something.0

Do you have accidental damage cover on your household insurance? The excess on that might be cheaper than the cost of repair and you'd get a new machine?
Just a thought?
(My OH bought me a Kenwood last year - one of the big monsters - titanium Major 020 - I LOVE it - use it for allsorts of things and I'd be gutted too if I broke it!(I know it sounds extravagant, but it was a great price and I'd always wanted one to replace the Chef I had which was about 40 years old!))

Thanks for the replies - I just rang Kenwood and they put me in touch with a local repair place. I rang them and the guy said that it would be £10 to have a look at it, and this would come off the bill if I went ahead with the repairs, but, given what I described was wrong with it and that Kenwood Patissier is the cheapest of all the Kenwoods it might be cheaper to buy a new one for £99. I have just looked on the Kenwood site and the capacity of the Patissier is loads and loads less than the Chef or the Major in terms of weight - Patissier can only do 600g of cough but the major can do nearly 3kg! Now iI don't really know what to do - the major is out of my price range as it is £400 ish, but I might be able to afford a chef - they often have them on special offer on Ideal World. My excess on my household policy is £150 so don't think that would be worth it really - if I had a Major or even a Chef then yes, but not for the Patissier.Jane

Did blokie say how much it would be for new motor if thats what has gone? Also do you need a new one or can you save for a bit and get the expensive one joyfully rather than guit ridden...also have you looked on ebay/amazon etc?Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! I am not technical at all, but sometimes smoke / smelly motors / not working appliances can just be something called the 'brushes' burnt out. I have had this happen once or twice over the years. It is scary when it happens from what I remember  even had flames once, but was not expensive to fix. Worth ringing to ask if this might be what has happened? Or is there someone on here that knows much more about electric motors than I do (most people probably)0

Hi Jane
That repair chap sounds ok - not a rip-off like most!
I got my major from Nisbets - it's a commercial catering catalogue/website but anyone can order from it. Their range is limited & some are different from the machines you get in Comet/Currys (read the spec carefully, esp. the motor power, some are only 800w, but some are 1500w - HUGE difference in power). But if you know which one you want, might be worth comparing the prices?
I looked on ebay last year but unless I could collect, the postage made it expensive (they're HEAVY!).
Have you tried freecycle - you'd be amazed what people give away!
I have an old Chef which works but doesn't look very pretty - if you're anywhere near Bedford, I'd be happy to let you come & look & take it away to see you through if you like? Tracey0 -
Hi - I bumped this thread because I took my patissier and it can be fixed but will cost almost as much as I paid for the patissier so I think I am going to buy a new one. I don't think I will get the patissier again because, although it looks lovely I don't think it is powerful or versatile enough. I am torn between the Kenwood chef KM560, KM010 and the Kitchenaid Artisan. They are all a similar price and it is more than I will have ever paid for a kitchen gadget so I want to choose wisely. Has anyone got any of the above and how do you find them?Jane

I have the Kitchen Aid artisan. I love it! I sometimes make whipped body butters in mine and have to leave it mixing those for between half an hour to an hour. It copes beautifully. There's a woman on one of the soaping forums that I use, who left hers running overnight by mistake and it was fine.
I've never used a Kenwood, but I'd definitely recommend the Kitchen Aid.
And of course, it looks good too!0 -
Just read this thread 'cos I just love my Kenwood chef, I have had it for over 30 years, last month the puppy chewed through the cable hanging out of the cupboard door AND I CRIED!! hubby found me sobbing in kitchen and said don't be silly you can have a new one - I told him the price and he nearly cried!!! Luckily he replaced the cable in about five minutes!!! I just can't believe I am so stupid 54 and sobbing over a Kenwood!Slightly bitter0

Kenwood is loads more versatile than the kitchenaid - can add liquidiser and numerous other attachments. My kenwood gets used nearly everyday I have the predecessor to the KM010 and its fab!People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.
