Cake making query

Its my daughters birthday on friday and i'm doing her cake in the shape of the number 10.
Would it work if i just made one large cake in a big roasting tin (say quadruple my cake mix and just adjust the timings accordingly?)
any help would be appreciated

It should be fine, especially as a roasting tin isn't too deep. Timings will be similar to tray bakes, unless you're making a dense madeira or heavy fruit cake. Just have plenty of jam and icing at hand to glue everything together - of course that could just be me!

  • You can certainly make the cake in a roasting tin. But don't quadruple the baking time. I'd give it an extra 10 mins. If it isn't done give it another 5-10 mins until it is.

Are you planning to make a very big cake? If you are planning to cut it out of a large rectangle you will have a lot of waste. You can freeze leftovers for lunchboxes or trifle;)

I made a 100th birthday cake for my Gran a few months ago. I made the zeros in two sandwich cake tins and used a large biscuit cutter to cut out the holes. I made the one in one of those multi-sized cake tins that you can adjust to any size. But, if I hadn't had one of those I'd have used my square cake tin and cut a third off to make the one.
