Anyone used Digital Techmart before?

Options
Hello - I was just wondering if anyone has used this site and if it is legit?

http://digitaltechmart.com

They are based in Cypurs and claim they are tax free.
Apple itouch 16gb £156.98 plus £12.99 p&p.

According to their site they have been around since 1990, but the user reviews on their site only go back to Oct 2008.

I'm so tempted, but am a bit wary.

If I buy on a credit card and it is dodgy, will I be able to get my money back with them being based in the EU?

Thank you

Can never keep up with the thread - otherwise I'll never get anything done! But hugs to All :grouphug:

  • Hello, I'm very interested in this too.... They've got an amazing Panasonic TV on there for £368 which is £230 cheaper than anyone else... but like you Flybabybunting, don't want to buy something from there if it is a little on the 'dodgy' side.
    Thanks

  • Same here, seen a great price for a laptop. There's a long discussion about the site here:

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/plasma-televisions/926906-digital-techmart.html

Some issues from the above site:

    - Most people who have posted there haven't actually tried to buy anything. Ones that have are accused of having a vested interest (i.e. are scammers from the company writing positive reviews). Of course, there's no way of knowing, but that could be true of anybody writing good reviews.
    - Somebody tried to register with false information to see how secure it was. Apparently it wasn't (but I don't really understand why).
    - There's apparently something fishy going on with domain details. Not sure what exactly, but they've been changed recently which apparently isn't good.
    - The posters think the reviews up on the digital techmart website are made up.
    - There's some discussion about the legitimacy of paying by bank transfer, but I didn't understand how this discussion came up. Perhaps digital techmart don't accept cards, and this looks suspect.
    - Some posters seem suspicious of buying anything from Cyprus, although they don't say why.

I don't know anything about buying stuff tax-free from abroad. It may well be perfectly ligitimate. But I don't think I'm going to risk it for the sake of saving a hundred pounds. My main reason for this is the apparent security problem for payment. If you're still thinking about it, I suggest you look into this in more detail.

    Hope this helps...
  • I've decided against it.

I also did a bit of digging and found the forum that Elsi mentions. It's a bit sporadic in it's discussion, however one thing that was clear is that the site does not have a 'secure' function on it - in other words when you put in any of your details, it does not come up with the padlock sign or the https:// bit that is vital.

The discussion goes on that this company claims to have been around for over 10 years, but the website has only been in operation for a couple of days, yet there are comments from apparent customers dating from before the website existed, and they all seem to say the exactly the same thing, "excellent product" or "really enjoyed using it". All in all, it does sound a bit fishy.

Obviously I have no proof, but i do feel that if this was a valid legit company, it would have been discussed on MSE before yesterday too... could be proven wrong, but I'd rather spend an extra £200 now, than lose £600 altogether.
  • Thankyou guys.

I think I won't bother after reading everything above. It does seem really fishy? How can they get away with this? Can't we report this to anyone?

  • i was looking at a 32gb ipod touch for 192 quid. it was a hundred quid less than any where else which i thought was great, but then alarm bells started sounding in my head. and i was thinking why is it so cheap and why does it only allow payment direct from the bank acount?

Thanks for all the comments saying that its a scam and things like that saved me 190 quid
