Is it just me who thinks you can't give a bad reference these days due to EC regulations "Restriction of Trade" or similar?There is no excuse for rudeness. Ignorance on the other hand is excusable – you don’t know what you’re talking about.0

It's very unprofessional for an employer to provide a bad reference and probably reflects worse on any employer who does so than on the employee to which it refers.
It also opens the door to potential litigation by the employee for libel etc (but you can't libel someone if the comments made are true)
However, an employer is under no obligation to provide any employee with a reference and a carefully worded refusal is fully understood as to it's true meaning by any prosessional recruiting agency/personnel officer."Now to trolling as a concept. .... I didn't know that it would be possible to give no reference, - I wanted to be able to point out the good things about the person too. It was a letter not email. Hopefuly it's all in the past now, I don't know what happened as I have left myself. I shall know in future though I've written lots of references before and never had this situation.
