Does anyone know how much it costs to claim a payment with Direct Debit?

Just checked my bank statement and one of my recent debits was for 7p for my mobile phone bill, I am sure it cost them more to action the debit and I was curious about how much it would cost....

And if anyone is wondering how I keep my mobile bill so low it's on a matched tarriff that I set up about 8 years ago when I was given a work mobile that I can use for reasonable personal use. I rarely use my own phone except when on holiday and the 7p was for picking up some messages on the answering machine.

  • Credit cards work on a variable % from their clients.

Direct Debits, I think, work on a fixed charge, which at one time was 35p I expect it might be higher now.

It is probably not worth while not spending 35p to get 7p.

I suspect that you're thinking of debit card payments, not direct debits.

In answer to the original question, I guess that the phone company might end up losing a little bit of money on the transaction, but thinks that it would cost them even more to put all the extra processing in place to weed out these very small direct debit demands from the rest.
