Wrong colour oven. Discount or exchange?

I've just bought an oven, not being delivered until new stock arrives (probably next weekend).

The display model was silver, but the label said also available in white & black. I ordered the black model (which was the colour I wanted). When I got home I Googled the oven model to see If I'd got a good price. I know, I should have done it before I bought it. Anyway, it turns out that the model I've been sold is brown - not even listed as an option on the shelf label.

I was going to go back to the store and ask to have it corrected, but a friend suggested waiting until the oven arrives, and if it is wrong phoning the customer service department. They may offer a discount/ credit note rather than having to swap the oven.

Has anyone had a similar experiance? How much could I expect to get refunded? I've got my eye on a nice quick-kettle. I wouldn't normally buy one, but if they're offering to pay...

They usually only refund about 10%

  • get the correct oven, if this one isnt what you want then everytime you look at it you gonna think dang wish i had a silver one..... blue one..... pink one... lol

it would bug me putting up with an item i didnt want. especially when its fitted in my kitchen and im looking at it everyday. you'll probably still be able to blag the kettle as they nadgered up your order.

thats a fairly wild guess considering the company is unknown.......

if its had to be ordered in then they may have a restocking fee to get it returned, this is sometimes 40% depending on the supplier they use. i used to work in a merchants and its an !!!! returning appliances ordered in, they sit in stock unwanted for ages then get sold cheap anyway.

ask what their supplier return terms are if you want to haggle the hell out of them, they may have upto 40% to play with...... ya never know.

It might end up being black. Some companies have slightly different model numbers for the same product so if it's got a B in it, for example, it could mean black for one company, brown for another.

If it is brown and you try to negotiate a discount, it's probably down to your negotiation skills and the discretion of the person you speak to. No point trying to guess.

Contrary to some posters opinion, if you order something black and it turns up brown you should of course be entitled to a full refund.

Depends, BL or BLK is normally black, Br or BWN is normally brown, that would be an obvious one.

OP, I would see what the discount is and decide BEFORE you make that call what price you are willing to accept- its your call, (pun not intended) its your kitchen and its your colour code, but bear in mind as the oven is not faulty, it could be the price difference you want is not something they will offer- shouldn't be a problem for them to ship a new one to you and at the same time take the old one back or offer a refund in full and apology.

Personally, I would ask no less then 50% for a colour such as brown when I wanted black- the colours that are in your kitchen may look odd/not match, and knowing I would not get this, it would then be a case of a full refund/exchange and good will delivery price refunded. Thats me, you may well have other ideas and be willing to settle at a different price.

Do they still make brown ovens? Usually only various shades of silver/grey and white.

How much of an impact will brown make in your kitchen if you wanted black and white?

    Thanks for all the comments/suggestions.

For the record the oven cost about £420 from Currys. The oven is a German model (Neff) so the code for black is SO, brown is BO. As mentioned in the first post brown isn't offered as an option. My existing oven and hob are both brown (dirt & rust?? ) so depending on the shade it may fit it quite well. Not what I ordered though!

Seen as it's the wrong colour to what you ordered and you can buy it almost £70 cheaper elsewhere (if I've got the right oven) then unless they offer a 20% discount I would reject it and repurchase.

Thought about that. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=18569617&postcount=2031 Might give it a try. But, as you say, I may get a better discount by keeping it.
