Premium for sure - cheaper in the long run.

You might find it hard to find a premium one on sale anywhere. If he already has an XBox and wants to play his old games from that on the 360, then he will NEED a hard drive, which means getting a premium system, or paying extra for a hard drive to go with the core system. (Hard drives are hard to find unless you're willing to pay over the odds for one on ebay).

There is very little other difference between the premium and the core system (you get a free headset and a wireless controller with the premium. The core system only gives you a wired controller).

Personally, I would buy what you can find. They are still in short-ish supply, at least in my area, so if I didn't already have one, and someone bought me even just the core system I would be ecstatic.

Personally I would go for the premium package as for the extra £70 you are getting the following which is not included in the core package

hard drive (RRP £70 but sell for £100+ on ebay & Amazon)
headset (not used mine but handy to have if you need it)
wireless controller (personally I prefer the wirelees to the 360 wired controller)
Hi-Def cable (worth it if you have a Hi-Def TV as you only get a basic cable in the core)
Free remote control (only in certain number of packs so may have finished)

If you where to buy the core system you need to buy either a memory card (around £25) or hard drive which are hard to get hold of at normal price so the extra £70 is worth it as if you decided to purchase the items seperate it would cost more.

In my area the shops seem to be getting steady stock into the shops, best bet is probably Game or Argos for getting hold of a premium or you could keep your eyes on https://www.xbox360locator.co.uk/ who have links to shop websites and people post up if shops get any stock in so you get a bit of a warning before anyone that does'nt check the site.

Got mine on 23/12/05 when my brother was doing shopping is Asda and they had a delivery so it was a case of being in the right place at the right time
  • Comet have very limited supplies of the premium package at the moment and my DS1 managed to order one at the weekend, although they're still waiting on more stock of the Project Gotham game to come in, which was part of the bundle.
