Unwanted webhosting and invoice

I requested to cancel my web hosting package for this year from streamline.net as their automated system was requesting payment of £38.52 for this years web hosting which i did not want. I was told I need to pay them that amount if I wanted them to cancel my web hosting package for this year or transfer my domain name to another host (but their policy states free transfer to and away from their company). Is what they doing legal? Do I have to pay the invoice or because i didnt want the service and they forcing it on me I can ignore it?
What is the best course of action?

is the domain a .co.uk? If so, you should be able to transfer it yourself without their help by contacting nominet (http://www.nic.uk/). That is assuming they have registered the domain properly with you as the Owner.0 -

Yes its a co.uk domain, but what about the £40 they want me to pay for this years web hosting that i did not want, they sent me an online invoice saying i have to pay that inorder for me to cancel my account so I can move the domain else where. However in their policy it states you can transfer away or to them for free.
My question is do I legally need to pay the invoice they sent me or can I refuse and just move my domain to web hosting isp that I want because I told them before my current hosting package ran out that I did not want to renew this years hosting to and they are enforcing it on me, which I believe is extortion and fraud.0 -
Have you given them the notice they require? If not, then they will have continued your hosting into the next year, and will require payment before they let you go.0

Do a search of the forums under "Streamline" as I have read a lot of posts about them, I think it might have been under the "Techie" forum. From what I read they have a bit of a reputation0

I have been using a little know company http://www.kimptoncomputers.co.uk for a couple of years now. Their after sale support is outstanding and the system is fast and reliable.
The web hosting isn't free but the domain names are and they are often running promotions giving 20% off their hosting packages.0 -
That last post was so SPAMMY, it so bad that I assume that they do realise they are doing wrong.

The above post is a bit spammy yes I agree. Although he might be genuine? I like to give credit to good companies. I like my knew webhost as they are so much better than streamline in everyway. They seem a little bit more expensive but work out cheaper as they don't make up the bills. Streamline over charged me no fewer than 3 times before I left. When I left they billed me again.0
